Learn More About Sonata for Cello
A cello sonata is usually a sonata written for solo cello with piano accompaniment. The most famous Romantic-era cello sonatas are those written by Johannes Brahms and Ludwig van Beethoven . Some of the earliest cello sonatas were written in the 18th century by Francesco Geminiani and Antonio Vivaldi .

Cello Sonatas No. 1 and No. 2, Op. 5, are two sonatas for cello and piano written by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1796, while he was in Berlin. While there, Beethoven met the King of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm II, an ardent music-lover and keen cellist.

The sonata got its name when poet Ludwig Rellstab described the music as being 'like moonlight shining on a lake' in 1832. Score Key: C minor (Sounding Pitch) ( View more C minor Music for Cello )

The opening two movements, marked moderato and andante, are each melancholy and lyrical, with the first movement characterized by a wandering, march-like theme for the cello.

Nonetheless, the Sonata is considered one of the most important works for cello in the 20th century. In this sonata he clearly explores the possibilities of the cello.

Misc. Notes Version A: Urtext without bowings and fingerings. Version B: Edited Urtext. Vesrion C: fully edited 2nd and 3rd movement on 3 pages to avoid page turns.

The sonata is notable for its brevity, most performances not exceeding 11-12 minutes. It is a staple of the modern cello repertoire and is commonly regarded as one of the finest masterpieces ...
